New Age Renewable Energy Transforming Unusable Dairy Byproducts into Hand Sanitizer

What if that cup of yogurt or block of cheese you bought today also produced a key ingredient in hand sanitizer? It can. New Age Renewable Energy, operating under its trade name Cayuga Ingredients, is transforming unusable dairy byproduct destined for disposal facilities into hand sanitizer. Not only is Cayuga making products that keep communities across America safe, they’re also generating clean water and high-quality animal food, all from dairy waste. How? Through a sustainable innovative process created by co-founder Joe Van Groll, ten years in the making.

“Our method has been developed over the better part of a decade,” shared Van Groll. “We knew the positive impact that our process would have on the industry and environment. We never imagined that we might play a part in saving lives as well.”

After years of development, Cayuga Ingredients was set to open their facility to produce beverage grade alcohol in March, just as the United States was hit hard by the Coronavirus. Like many companies, they shifted their focus to fighting the crisis, and BOS Hand Sanitizer was born. The difference between Cayuga Ingredients and the hundreds of distilleries across the country that are making hand sanitizer: Cayuga is able to produce large quantities of high quality neutral spirts in far less time than its corn- based competitors. The hand sanitizer market today is littered with foul-smelling, fuel-based ethanol products, a number of which have been singled out by the FDA for their dangerous components. Not only does Cayuga produce its own ethanol under a rigid quality control regimen, the factory actually has the ability to rectify unsuitable fuel ethanol into high quality, beverage-grade alcohol. While BOS (latin for “cow”) is sold directly to consumers in gallon jugs, they specialize in manufacturing and shipping hand sanitizer in bulk – 55-gallon drums and 275-gallon tanks. As if that wasn’t enough, they do it all in an eco-friendly and sustainable way that protects the environment, while saving farmers money. All from dairy byproducts.

Every year, the United States produces over 100 billion pounds of dairy byproducts known as milk derivatives. Until now, there has been no solution for the rapid processing of a large quantities of this material. This byproduct is traditionally unusable and disposed of into waste treatment centers, or worse, rivers and streams, at grave cost to the dairy manufacturers who produce it and the surrounding environment. Cayuga Ingredients is changing the disposal process by using 100% of this material to create pure, clean ethanol. No other facility has been able to turn whey permeate into ethanol at the quality and quantity as Cayuga Ingredients.

Located in the heart of Cayuga county in New York, the eastern hub dairy manufacturing, sits Cayuga’s one million gallon-per-year capacity plant. Milk derivatives arrive at the distillery from neighboring dairy plants where it is converted into ethanol, which is then used to create the desperately needed hand sanitizer. Cayuga then distributes this hand sanitizer across the county. And while the cost of hand sanitizer around the world has soared in recent months, Cayuga keeps its costs low to make BOS Hand Sanitizer accessible for the communities that need it. Since its inception in March, BOS has been purchased by local governments, donated to nonprofits, and shipped to customers as far as Alaska, Hawaii and Caribbean’s. In just three short months, Cayuga has produced tens of thousands of gallons of sanitizer for the communities that need it most.

Cayuga Ingredients’ capacity, ingenuity and reliability is unmatched. Not only is BOS Hand Sanitizer fulfilling unprecedented demand, it’s also protecting the environment from harmful waste products.
Unlike traditional corn ethanol distillation, Cayuga’s process produces and recycles water, rather than
consume it. In fact, for every one gallon of ethanol distilled, five gallons of water and one pound of highprotein animal feed are produced. And they do it all using 1/3 of the energy as other ethanol producers.

Since its launch, Cayuga has been a bright spot in the ravaged economy, creating high-paying
professional jobs in Cayuga County (among the hardest hit by virus-related industry complications).
Cayuga Ingredients has paved the way for sustainably sourced, environmentally friendly products that
benefit their communities.

So, what’s next for Cayuga? “Although we have no plans to stop producing sanitizer, we look forward to
carrying out our original goal of distilling spirits,” said company president, Eduard Zaydman. “We know
that the alcohol we produce from whey could be among the cleanest, smoothest spirits in the world. It
will be a particularly special moment for us, after having produced alcohol to sanitize, when we produce
it to celebrate.”
