Newest Virtual Member Builds Smartphone Microscopes

June 19, 2017

The Tech Garden welcomes Kenji Yoshino, the inventor of The Smartphone Microscope. In 2013, Yoshino released a DIY smartphone microscope tutorial on YouTube which went viral with over 2.5M viewers. The Smartphone Microscope extends fundamental scientific observation beyond the laboratory to the palm of your hand, offering anyone with a smart device the ability to peek into the microscopic world with an affordable, easy-to-use microscope.

The Smartphone Microscope is dedicated to democratizing science by creating products that inspire learning through exploration. The scopes are being used in classrooms around the world. After graduating from Grinnell College in 2011 with a B.A. in Chemistry, Yoshino spent the summer teaching science to children at the local public library with his hands-on-science show called “Try This at Home!”. It was that formative experience that sparked his passion for sharing science with others. Two years later he invented and released the plans to the first smartphone microscope!
