That’s exactly what Cypris Therapeutics, founded by Kyle Parella, PhD, aims to do.
“Therapeutically resistant cancers like brain, pancreatic, colon, and prostate cancer claim millions of lives each year,” Parella explains. “Everyone knows someone with cancer. For those whose disease doesn’t respond to current treatments, the experience is especially grim—many die within a year of diagnosis. We’re developing therapies to help the millions of people who currently have no effective options.”
The company’s name, Cypris, is a nod to the Cypress tree—an origin with deep scientific roots. “The original molecules we used as inspiration for our treatments are found in the bark of the Cypress tree,” says Parella. “We had to modify the spelling for branding and PR purposes, but the name still reflects where we began.”
As a new client at INSPYRE, Cypris Therapeutics recently received support for a critical phase of preclinical development. “Our primary focus this past year has been on brain cancer, and we’ve gathered excellent data. The funding from INSPYRE is allowing us to expand our testing into other deadly cancer types,” Parella shares. The team is now focused on animal testing to assess safety and efficacy—key milestones before approaching the FDA with proposals for human trials.
Parella says INSPYRE’s support has been instrumental. “Our experience has been amazing. The staff are dedicated to helping their clients succeed and are always available for consultation. The introductions and resources through INSPYRE have been crucial in our growth over the past year.”
As construction wraps up on the new INSPYRE headquarters in downtown Syracuse, Parella is looking forward to joining the energy of the space. “New facilities like this draw so much talent and excitement,” he says. “It’s exhilarating to be around other entrepreneurs tackling difficult problems.”
His advice to fellow founders? “Surrounding yourself with a strong team is key.”
